Addition & Renovation by: Americon Construction

May 16, 2023

After nearly 8 years of planning and fundraising, the Sparta Free Public Library finally broke ground on a needed expansion.  The expansion plans are to retain the building’s historic features, but add nearly 9,000 square feet of additional space.  Fundraising efforts through public and private sources has raised approximately 1.2 million dollars, closing in on the goal of 1.5 million needed for the project.

Michelle Tryggestad, director of the Sparta Free Library made the announcement during the ceremony.  “By adding more space, the additional space provides opportunities for people to come in, hang out, meet with a group of friends, or even hold an interview in the media room.  All of those opportunities are much needed in today’s day and age,” concluded Tryggestad.  A crowd of nearly 60 people were on site to help celebrate the groundbreaking, including Library & city officials, private donors, the architect, and builder (Americon).

The Sparta Library was built in in 1902, and in 1981 it was added to the US National Registry of Historic Places.  In 1982, it underwent a half million dollar restoration and expansion, and now an additional expansion will take place forty one years later.
